Bad girl in Dublin August 2010

August 4th, 2010

I’m heading off to Dublin Ireland today to do a new How to Be a Bad Girl at Bewleys on August 8 at 8:30. I’m excited to pull together the best of All-Nude College Girl Revue or why I can’t pass the vetting and the musical verison of How to Be  aBad Girl with Ellen for a new show especially for Dublin.

Then I’ll go to see Ellen Mandel’s concert at the Kilkenny Arts Festival on Aug 10 and 11.

Should be a lovely time!

Next show at Bewleys in Dublin Ireland

July 20th, 2010

I’m going to do a new version of How to Be a Bad Girl in Dublin at Bewleys on Sunday, August 8th, 2010 at 8:30.

Ellen will be in Kilkenny doing her more serious compositions at the Kilkenney Arts Festival so I’m going back to the show I developed in 2008 The All-Nude College-Girl Revue or why I can’t pass the vetting. I’ll meld some of the best of both shows with Irish events commentary and it should be an exciting night.

I’ll be staying with my dear friends the classical singer Judith Mok and her husband the poet laureate of Galway Michael O’Loughlin. Looking forward to the cool air of Dublin after the host summer in NYC.

Delicious summertime

July 20th, 2010

I escaped for a week on Bald Head Island with family and friends.  Lucas Child here with surfboard is a son of friends and a charming Abercrombie and Fitch model who was fun to hang out with.

What a delight to walk on the beach and swimin the ocean, especially with my adorable twin neices who are now ten.

New show How to Be a Bad Girl at Cornelia St. Cafe Downstairs on April 12 at 6:30

April 10th, 2010

When Cornelia St offered me new dates in 2010 starting with Valentine’s Day, I knew it was time to revisit the show I was sued for (I was sued for trademark infringement by the FranklinCovey Corporation owners of the trademark “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. You can picture the title of my show by changing People to Mistresses and adding a 1/2). My wonderful pianist and composer, Ellen and I had such fun with the first draft of the new show How to Be a Bad Girl with my 7/12 Secrets of how to be a bad girl. Happily we had a  full house of many people we didn’t know. Talking to people after the show they said they loved the show and that they had come just from seeing the title and write-up in the Cornelia Street Cafe publicity and web-site.  I was delighted as it seems there are many bad girl out there!

For the next date at Cornelia Street Cafe Downstairs on Monday, April 12 at 6:30, Ellen is out in San Francisco doing a series of concerts of her more serious compositions so I thought it is the ideal time for me to do a solo version of How to Be a Bad Girl to really think about how society tells independent women that they are bad and selfish so how can we flip that around and by embracing it make it liberating.  I have had such fun going through the first draft of the show and working with Cheryl Stern (who has just been cast in the new Broadway production of La Cage aux Folles) to figure out what would work on stage alone. I’m also keen to develop a solo show that I can take on tour to China and this seems like the ideal one.

I hope you can come to this version or the next one with Ellen back on Tuesday, June 29.

What a fun February 2010!

February 28th, 2010

Lisa Faith Phillips did her new show How to Be a Bad Girl at Cornelia Street Cafe Downstairs on Valentine’s Day - i was a great night! We’re doing the next show April 12 at 6:30.

Ellen and I had such a good time doing the new show for Valentine’s Day. We had a full house and saw lots of friends. With all the bad girls in the news there were lots of juicy topics to poke fun at and since both of us have worked at Cornelia St in different shows, we are very comfortable there and were looking forward to trying the new material.  Happily bad girls are a big draw.  Over half the audience had just come because they saw the publicity. And I chatted with lots of people as they came up after to say how much they loved the show.  Music to my ears. And when they told me they had come because drawn in by the publicity, I was delighted as it is hard to standout in the many distractions of NYC.

Then I took off for Paris where Judith Mok was singing 2 concerts at the Irish Cultural Center on Feb 18 and 19 .  I had a wonderful time. I stayed in a charming pension Hotel du Lys near St. Michel for half the trip so I was free to come and go with all the concert activities then moved to my friend Claire’s around the corner. I was lucky as the weather lifted from the intense cold Paris had ben experiencing to almost spring-like weather. I walked and walked and saw lots of old friends, had many delicious meals and played with Judith and Micheal a lot. The concerts were excellent and the musicians brilliant. After the concerts when Judith and Micheal moved to their friends loft near the Canal St Martin we had glorious time exploring that changing area.

I have known Judith and her husband Michael since right after graduate school.  I had moved to Barcelona to teahc English and extend for as long as possible living in Europe and this time on the Mediterranean. I moved into a group apt where Micheal lived.  M. was there with a grant from the Irish gov as he had published his first collection of poetry at 17 and had just finished  his degree at Trinity in Dublin, and we had some wonderful times in that great city. I met Judith first as she was in Barcelona studying singing and singing at the French Institute and I introduced her to M. They ended up going off together and marrying eventually. We then lost touch for a number of years and when i visited Barcelona about 7 years ago I thought let me try to Google them and sure enough i found lots of mentions of M and his screenwriting and poetry and Judith had a site. When i sent her an email, a second later I got an answer.  She said she had been writing a novel set in Barcelona and had been thinking of me right then. (In addition to her singing career she has published five  books in Dutch and one in English.)

On Sunday we went to Claire Alby’s film screenings at the Louvre and joined the reception after.  then ended a perfect week with a birthday dinner for M at Claire’s mother’s impressive apt on St Germain.

The All-Nude College-Girl Revue or why I can’t pass the vetting on October 26 at Cornelia Street Cafe Downstairs

September 21st, 2009

I’m back at Cornelia Street Cafe Downstairs, 29 Cornelia Street, NYC www.corneliastreetcafe.com on October 26 at 6:30 with my new show The All-Nude College-Girl Revue or why I can’t pass the vetting. Robin Hirsch  (co-owner of the cafe and gifted writer and performer - check out his one-man show anytime you can at the cafe - riveting!)  and Angelo Verga, an important poet who books the spoken word nights, have been super supportive and kindly given me dates through-out the year to fine-tune the new show.

The first drafts I had titled Drink, Blaspheme, F* as I was going to do a travel-loque show about taking my show to Dublin,  traveling to China and Abu Dhabi, but as that morphed into a show about being sued by the FranklinCovey Corporation for trademarkinfingement for their trademark of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for my musical parody of a self-help lecture about being a mistress and all the other things I have done to make it so I could never pass the vetting to work for Obama and help our country.

I’ll also be bringing back the mistress show at the cafe for Valentine’s Day 2010, under the new title Dr Faith’s Bad Girls’ Guide to Mistressing.

So pleased!

May 27th, 2009

I had a wonderful show on Memorial Day at Cornelia Street. With the perfect weather we had a small house but I was expecting that. All I wanted was to try out the 2nd draft before an audience. The people who enjoyed it but best of all was that the owner Robin Hirsch sat down in the audience and watched the whole show, laughing a lot and then afterwards came up and said how much he loved it. He said he is exposed to many shows (and does his own wonderful one-man show) and my new show stood-out as very entertaining and commercial. He’s glad I’m developing it at Cornelia Street as i will be back July 13 for draft 3.

Robin thought i should change the name from Drink, Blaspheme, F* to a version of a show name I used for my play The All-Nude College-Girl Revue (and other reasons I couldn’t pass the vetting). So I’ll use that for the next run.

I’m doing an excerpt at Joe’s Pub on Sunday brunch for The Depression Show with Justin Bond, Tammy Faye Starlite and Lady Jane so that is very exciting!.

What an exciting time!

May 23rd, 2009
